The first years of a child's life are vital for their physical, mental and social development. Early inclusion of children in Pre-Primary Education contributes decisively to their all-round development:
- Cognitive development
- Emotional maturity
- Socialization
- Ethical and religious culture
- Psychomotor and aesthetic development
- Acquisition of life skills, attitudes, principles and values
Through the diverse educational programs, the following is sought:
- creative expression and thinking,
- timely intervention,
- social integration,
- preparing children for primary school,
- and maximizing their potential for school success.
Institutionalization
By Decision of the Council of Ministers (No. 59.824, 14/04/2004), from September 2004, the free compulsory pre-primary education one year before the child's admission to primary school.
This decision was a milestone for the educational system of Cyprus and upgraded the role of Pre-Primary Education.
Study Ages
The Directorate of Primary Education ensures the possibility of attending school for all children at the following ages:
- 4 6/12 years old and older → school year 2024–2025
- 4 5/12 years and older → school year 2025–2026
- 4 4/12 years and older → school year 2026–2027
- 4 4/12 years and older → school year 2027–2028
- 4 3/12 years and older → school year 2028–2029
- 4 2/12 years and older → school year 2029–2030
- 4 1/12 years and older → school year 2030–2031
- 4 years old → school year 2031–2032 and onwards
Choosing a Kindergarten
Studying takes place mainly in public kindergartens, which also cover the needs of children over 3 years old. However, parents retain the right to choose between a public or private kindergarten, depending on their needs and preferences.
